Imagine being the parent of a child with disabilities or special needs in an place where there is absolutely no support available. On duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, knowing that your child desperately needs specialist help, that you yourself need help and advice, but that there is nobody there for you or your special child.
The Star Flower Day Centre is the only facility for such special children along the whole of the Thai-Burma border. The children come in two groups, a Monday and Thursday group and a Tuesday and Friday group. Wednesdays are for a group including those children from both the groups who are physically capable of attending for a third day without exhausting themselves.
The benefit to the children is playing with others, singing and dancing as part of a group and the excitement of some simple but well-chosen play equipment. The enthusiastic and cheerful staff includes a couple with remarkable musical talents. Parents are encouraged to attend with the children at first. They can learn simple physiotherapy techniques which will help exercise their children and bring weak or seized-up limbs back into use. They get encouragement and confidence from seeing their child develop. But over time they are encouraged to leave the child and take some time off for themselves - something many have never had since their child was born.
Star Flower brings hope and healing for parents, play fun and friends for children. It is a special place for special people.
